Helen asks…

I am looking for a good location for a golf outing for 12-16 of my buddies from college.?

We are looking for a good location for a golf outing for around 12 people. We are interested in good golf, but also a good scene to go out at night We all live in ny/philly/dc area now and we are probably interested in renting a house rather than hotel. I’d say our interest is probably split 50/50 between golfing and drinking/going out. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go or how to research this?

Mary asks…

I have questions about playing golf at Bethpage State Park, I’m curious?

I know if you are going to play golf walking in at Bethpage Black, you have to stay overnight the night before, and park and campout in the parking lot, and I don’t plan to play there, I’m just curious, and I just want to know. Do you also have to stay overnight if you want to play the other Bethpage courses, like the Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow courses? Or you just have to stay overnight if you are going to play the Black course? Also if you made a reservation, a tee time for Bethpage Black, do you still have to stay overnight the night before, or you just show up like an hour early before your tee time? I know that you can make reservations by phone if you have your name on the system. I know that you can make a reservation a week in advance for NY state residents, and 2 days in advance for out of NY state residents. Also if you make reservations by phone, is it hard to get a tee time reservation in the Black course? How hard is it to get a reservation by phone? Also is it also hard to get in the other Bethpage courses like the Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green courses? According to Wikipedia, Torrey Pines in San Diego also does the same thing. Does any one know also if in Torrey Pines, you have to stay overnight to get a tee time if your walking in? Also in Bethpage,I know that they also give you a bakery ticket at 4:30 AM to those in line in the parking lot. What is a bakery ticket? Since I saw a segment in the US Open, on some NBC Sports workers stayed overnight for a tee time at Bethpage Black, and I saw them giving them a bakery ticket. I taught a bakery ticket is a ticket good for one free item or something from the bakery, like a muffin or something. Because I taught they will let you get something from the bakery free since you stayed overnight. I taught the bakery ticket is good for something in the bakery, if there is one in the clubhouse. I bet it’s not, but is it a ticket for one free pastry or something from the bakery? I’m sure it’s not, but what is a bakery ticket in Bethpage Black. I know they also give you wristbands to show that you were in line, and they cut it before you tee off in the first tee. Also does juniors, and women play in Bethpage Black? Is there also a forward red tee box in the Black course for women. I know there is a warning sign at the first tee saying only for low handicappers only. And can a junior play Bethpage Black? I know there is no junior fee there. I’m sorry, I know I have alot of questions, but I’m just curious, I just want to know. Only on weekends you have to camp out overnight in the parking lot. So on the weekdays, you can just walk in whenever? For the Black Course.
I already put this on the Golf section, and only 2 people answered. So I thought it would help to put it here, so probaly more people would answer, since more locals from NY answer here.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

Seriously, if you could break that down into a few logical non-repetitive questions I could probably answer some of them and I’m sure other people could, too. And try more than one big, long run-on paragraph. Sorry, but I can’t even make myself read that.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

You do not have to camp out overnight to play any of the courses. Only on weekends you wait in line and get a ticket. The black course is not as crowded as people think since it is such a difficult course and can only be walked.

Daniel asks…

What do you think of my life?

OK, first off I am a 19 year old boy from NY and I graduated Hi School in 2006June. I have taken the year off, but I am going to college this fall. Now it is is spring, each day I wake up, have breakfast, excersice on eliptical, shower, read, eat lunch, go out side in the backyard to practice my golf, then I water my vegetables in my garden, later I go on the computer and sometimes I play board games with my sister. Then I eat dinner, at at night I watch TV and go on the computer and then go to bed. Oh, and one other thing, this summer I am trying to get a part time job (My mum is helping me) and I will be attending college in the fall.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

And the point of this question is? It sound like the life of most of the kids I know out of high school.

Your Questions About The Golfing Machine Book

George asks…

Does Deepak Chopra give spiritual lessons on playing Golf ?

Deepak Chopra has recently taken up golf, and like so much of what the guru does, it may turn a profit too.

Chopra has written about his new game in a book titled, “Golf for Enlightenment.”

The MD and former disciple of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi says, “I nourish my relationship with the ball by saying, ‘You’re part of me…. When you soar, I will soar with you.’ ”

Right.

And Chopra insists, “It’s not about winning.”

But according to an LA Times article “Golf with Deepak” by Roy Rivenburg, Chopra doesn’t really seem to follow through on his mantras.

When his game didn’t go well the guru/doctor “became increasingly rattled and distracted.” At one hole “he walked off without two of his clubs.”

Later as the Times staff writer watched, “he hit the wrong ball in the tree area [and] his karma went completely on the fritz.”

The golfing guru later tacitly admitted, “My book isn’t really about golf…It would be stupid of me to write a book about golf…. The title just gets you in the door. Once you’re in the door, it’s about something else — spirituality.”

So once again as Rivenburg points out astutely Chopra is “a shrewd marketer.”

It seems the guru’s golf book is just another gimmick, this time to target men as consumers for his “spiritual…empire.”

Dr. Deepak has followed in the footsteps of his mentor Maharishi and made “spirituality” into a virtual money machine.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

He is a yogi who chose money over spirituality. Sorry to say, he sold his soul for dough and fame.

Joseph asks…

Now that Scott McClellan denounced the Bush war will Sean and Rush be paid to discredit him and his new book?

Typical of Republicans to discredit anyone that defects from the Bush family tree. I cannot wait for the Republican media machine to get to work tomorrow and start calling this Scott all names. I hope true conservatives can see through the lies Bush and his followers have told. Bush lied to protect his fathers failure/legacy, Period. He has put many of our families/military in harms way for the wrong objective, while also lying about his feeling sorry for them by not playing golf.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

Not only Hannity and Limbaugh, but Levine, Beck, Coulter, and the other clones will jump in repeating the same mantra. They are extremely organized when it comes to things like this.

Mandy asks…

Ten worst gifts to buy a woman?

1. Never give a woman any kind of household appliance or something that is going to make “housework” easier. For instance, a blender, a toaster, a new vacuum, one of those mops they advertise on tv that does everything but suck the life out of you, anything in a informercial. The only wise choice is a new washing machine with a turbo spin cycle. (Makes laundry day go by pretty fast when you can at least sit on it during spin-dry and end up smiling the rest of the day.)

2. Any bulk cleaning supplies, “honey, I got you that large box of Tide you have been wanting.” “This Windex should last you a while.” “I got a good deal on the industrial strength toilet bowl cleaner.” All I can say is, be prepared to run. I have faith that if you would have at least stopped and thought about what would be a much more intimate gift, you would have had the sense to spring for the $5 Chia Pet you were eyeing in Kmart.

3. Any sharp objects made by Ronco which slices or dices, or a set of ginsu knives. These may one day be used as a weapon against you when you come home with lipstick on your collar after a “night out with the boys.”

4. Do not buy gifts for yourself and pretend they are for her. “Honey, I’m sure you’ll get a lot of use out of the new drill I bought you.” By then she will have put it to good use by drilling a quarter inch hole into the side of your skull for even thinking she would accept such a lame gift. After a gift like this, you probably won’t be around for NEXT Christmas.

5. Any lingerie made of flannel, such as a pair of feet pajamas with a trap door in back. A Little Mermaid or Barney cartoon character nightgown. It gives her the idea that you do not consider her the sexy woman that she is. Take out that wallet and buy her something sexy from Victoria Secret (just like you did for your mistress or other girlfriend).

6. No name perfume which costs you $1.99, such as Eu de Toilet, which actually smells like the bathroom, moldy fruit, or your dirty socks. If you are going to buy her perfume, spring for the brand names.

7. Any type of cubic zirconia jewelry you see on the Home Shopping Network. It will be quite embarrassing when she is showing off that fabulous diamond to her friends and tries to cut glass with it. (We actually test them you know.) Also, now would not be a good time to buy her that set of diamond nipple clamps you always wanted to, you know how we like to show off our jewelry and it could get embarrassing at the New Year’s party when she decides to show them off to your buddies.

8. Please do not buy her clothes because you think for one minute you have good taste in woman’s clothing. Well, perhaps you might if you are a transvestite, but all in all, believe me, she’ll smile and say its beautiful while choking back tears and mumbling under her breath, “were the hell would I ever wear this outfit without being arrested for bad taste?” An additional hint, plaids do not go with stripes (even though you think your golfing outfit looks just fine). Its a known fact to the rest of the world that that is a taboo. In the Northeast, thats like wearing white after Labor Day.

9. Do not give her a gift certificate to Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. Most men would know better, especially the ones who have learned the correct response to “do these pants make me look fat.” If you are one of the poor souls who still doesn’t get it and purchased a gift like this, be prepared for the silent treatment for a month. (Although that may be something you would actually look forward to.) A better alternative would be hiring a Chippendale dancer as a personal trainer to get her motivated into getting fit.

10. Last but not least, never buy a woman anti-wrinkle cream, or a book on “How not to be Nasty Sunday through Saturday.” These are not considered gifts, they are considered reasons for seriously injuring the person who bought it and just may stand up in court of law.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

I always used to do the point no. 6, now i know how wrong i was next time i will take care, LOL

Your Questions About Golfing Instructions

Betty asks…

does anyone know of a free online pattern or instructions for drafting a PRACTICAL dog hat?

I could only find instructions for a sort of golf-hat and race-hat for greyhounds (I can re-size any pattern if necessary, so the intended breed does not matter) These are too ‘decorative’.
Obviously, the SM hasn’t owned a dog that gets sunburnt – and sunscreen doesn’t work because she just licks it off or rolls in the dirt with it. She has no issue wearing clothes though so I thought I might as well try a hat

Kyle McIlroy answers:

There is no such thing as a practical dog hat.

Dogs to not wear clothes therefore do not need hats.

Donald asks…

can anyone give me a wiring diagram for installing turn signals on a golf cart, or writtewn instructions.?

i do not have the owners manual or any manuals that came with the cart when it was new.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

You may be able to find a diagram on the manufacturer’s web site. How about the owner’s manual or maintenance manual.

Sandra asks…

Where is the Inlet Air Temp. Sensor on my VW Golf – detailed instructions needed. I know its on the air intake

Where is the Inlet Air Temp. Sensor on my VW Golf – detailed instructions needed. I know its on the air intake pipe somewhere.
I am looking for detailed instructions, photographs etc

thanks

Is it right at the end of the intake?, what does the cold start injector look like? WIll the car run hotter?
thanks

Kyle McIlroy answers:

At the end of intake, beside the cold start injector.

Ruth asks…

I try to repair the ’99 VW Golf upper radiatior hose, is there any websites or instructions online?

I would like to know how to do it by myself.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

The instuctions will be differnt depending on which engine you have. You can buy a manual at the bookstore or your local auto parts store.

2.0
1.8t
VR6

General instructions are the same.

Buy the hose and coolant. Make sure you get the correct G12 coolant as this will not mix with other coolants.

Using the new hose, find the old hose on the car. You may have to remove some of the engine covers to get to it. These plastic covers are held on by quarter turn screws. Turn counter-clockwise while gently pulling up on the plastic cover. Be careful not to pull too hard as you may lose a screw.

The hoses are usually held on by hose clamps. These are metal straps that are tightened by a worm gear. The VW may have a one-time use hose clamp on it. These are metal straps that are clamped shut and must be cut off. If you have the one-time use clamps on there. Leave them on and get replacement reusable ones from the auto parts place.

Before you remove the old hose, make sure your engine is cool, hot coolant can burn you.

Remove the two clamps (one on engine side, one on radiator side). If you have the one-time use clamps, you will have to break them off. Use a pair of pliars and twist the clamped together part while twisting underneath with a flathead screwdriver.

Make a not of how far the hose is pushed on the engine and radiator. Pull the hose off the engine and radiator side. You may lose some coolant. Make sure you don’t get anything in the radiator or engine side while the hose is off.

Put the new (or old if reuseable) clamps on the new hose loosely so that they are not too close to the ends of the hose. Push the new hose on as far as the old hose was. Position the clamps and turn the tightening screw until tight.

VWs have a sealed cooling system, so you do not add coolant to the radiator itself, you add it to the coolant resevior (white shereical container near the passenger side of the car. Depending on how much coolant you lost when you removed the old hose, you may or may not have to add coolant. If you have to add coolant, do so after you have run the engine for a few minutes and let it cool back down again. You run the engine to move coolant around the system.

Good luck

Sandy asks…

Where is the Best Golf Instruction Book?

I have been searching all over the place and I need a golf instruction book that will help my golf swing.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

For me, it’s Tiger Woods’ “How I Play Golf” book. That book taught me so much and that’s why I am at the top of my game. Just my opinion, but it’s a great book with a lot of details for every type of shot possible and it teaches you a lot.

Your Questions About Golfing For Beginners Courses

Michael asks…

Golf courses that don’t cost much?

My dad bought me my own golf clubs for my birthday. He said he was going to take me to play golf somewhere at Arat or Mount Airy. I just want to know what would be some good and easy beginners courses to start that don’t cost money or don’t cost MUCH money. Please don’t answer crazed. And please make sure the answer is only about GOLF!!!

Kyle McIlroy answers:

As a beginner a links course would be a nice start..more open spaces gracious fairways make gettin started a little easier. If ur not familiar with the course find the ones in ur area, ask the pro shop the slope or rating of the course. For Beginners, under 128 slope would be desirable..Your in luck with the economy, alot of courses are offering discounts..look on line for booking tee times and discounts..in the past 10 years a lot of private country clubs have been forced to go public..Just check ur area..

Paul asks…

Beginner golf courses in Ontario?

I’ d new to golf and I’m looking for some golf courses to go to in Ontario (2 or 3 hour drive from Toronto at the most preferably).

Anyone know of any?

Looking for somewhere to go that I won’t feel like Im getting in peoples way or holding things up as I’m just learning :)

Kyle McIlroy answers:

First off- welcome to this wonderful game!

There are a TON of courses in the GTA and beyond. A simple Google search of Toronto or GTA-area courses will help you locate courses. The city of Toronto operates several tracks (Dentonia is a lovely par-3 course, Scarlett Woods is an executive course (par 62), Tam O’Shanter is a wee longer and tougher…Don Valley (my favourite) is a tougher track but on it you can’t believe you’re still in the city limits).

Outside of the city, Markham Green is another par-3 course that’s fun but not brutal for beginners.

Some suggestions:
-Your talent or skill will not bother anyone (or lack thereof). Moving along, picking up when at double par, using good etiquette, etc. Will more than help you initially.
-Play the appropriate set of tees. Forget about gender…if playing from the forward tees will help you play better and enjoy the game…bingo.
-Try playing later in the day (especially on weekends).

Best of luck, and enjoy your rounds.

Ken asks…

What are the good brands selling golf equipments?

I am thinking of starting golf course for beginners. I want to buy some golf equipments.

What are the good brands selling golf equipments at cheap prices?

Kyle McIlroy answers:

Callaway and nickent for woods, nike and callaway for irons, cleveland and titleist for wedges, and scotty cameron and oddessy for putter.

Lizzie asks…

Is it okay for beginners to play on the golf course or is that not a good idea?

I’m not really good and I slice a lot top a lot etc. But I can hit the ball well just not consistently. So would I cause problems if I were to play on the course? I’m considering getting a club membership and I might as well use the course and not just the driving range.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

Very good idea because no one ever stepped on a golf course that was an experienced golfer.. We forget that in the beginning we had to learn to strike the ball and practice on the range does not sub for playing on any course. Beginning golfers drive the game because thru their addition the sport will always go on an become stronger. I say “GO PLAY AND FIRE AWAY’.

Ruth asks…

Point me in the direction of some easier golf courses in San Diego?

I’ve only just started playing (this year), and have up to now only really played executives. I’d like to graduate up to bigger courses, but my last couple of experiences weren’t much fun (Balboa & Carmel Mountain).

So… what are some good full size courses in San Diego that are suitable for beginners?

Kyle McIlroy answers:

Carmel Valley is about as easy as they get. Don’t expect so much out of your golf game so soon. Just have fun. Play with ambition and you will occasionally be rewarded. Play with expectation and you will always be disappointed. There’s another more down to earth course north of Escondido just past the Lawrence Welk facility on the same side of the highway. Can’t remember the name. It is a little harder than Carmel Valley but not as uppity so the pressure won’t be so much.

Your Questions About Golf Trips Now

David asks…

Who’s played Disc Golf and where is the best place to play?

I have played in Oregon a little bit and love it. I live in Utah now and wish there were more places to play. It is a prefect summer sport for those of us that are not as good at regular Golf! I just am going on a trip across the country and am wondering where are some good places to go.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

We love disc golf. A lot of fun and the price is right. I live in Nebraska and there’s a 36-hole course in Lincoln. Really nice if you’re ever in town.

William asks…

Why do I even care?

My husband of 6 yrs decided he wanted a divorce & 4 months later it was final. I didn’t want the divorce. He simply said he wanted to come and go as he pleases…having a wife & baby was tying him down. He says I’m smart, beautiful & a great mom…he just thinks we are incompatible & I’m bitchy. Anyway, the divorce was final last month & it is so hard. How do I stop loving him? When I’m around him I can barely look at him or speak to him it hurts so bad. Since the split, he’s been to Vegas, 3 golf trips & is now buying a motorcycle. He’s having a great time while I’m silenting suffering for the family I miss. Meanwhile, he’s mean to me most days when we have to discuss things like times to exchange our daughter etc. I never get angry or raise my voice. Everyone says he’ll regret it someday, even his own parents. But, I honestly think he must really be enjoying his new life. We are 33 yrs old…why why why do I even care how he spends his time after he dumped me?
Just to answer most of you, he is extremely successful & we receive excellent alimony & child support so there are no financial concerns.

Kyle McIlroy answers:

I know this is a hard time but you will get over him. He must enjoy seeing you suffer, why don’t you get on with your life.. And really find someone that is going to love you the way you should be loved and let him see how he likes that one!! Most men are stupid.. And don’t realize the grass isn’t greener on the other side..

Chris asks…

Is it okay for my husband to take solo ski trips by himself?

My husband often takes trips up to Blue Mountain on his own, now as a family we all ski and snowboard. We have been happily married for 15 years, but it bothers me that he takes it upon himself to go up for the day without giving much thought to the others. Is this okay or am I being selfish. I know some men golf and perhaps he just want to be on his own. What does everyone think. Is this ok?
He likes to do it on a weekly basis,
He likes to do it on a weekly basis,

Kyle McIlroy answers:

I am an avid golfer and love to get out once and a while and golf a round with friends. However I would ask my significant other if she wanted to go once in a while too. I see his point and I see yours also. Talk to him about it. If you’ve been married for 15 years, he should be fine with talking to you about it.

Thomas asks…

I broke up with my GF for many reasons & now I want her back whats my deal?

All the BS & I still want her back in the worst way,she drove me crazy & complained about the smallest of things, her birthday I didn’t do enough,I teased her once in a cute way & she just got PISSED!!! I went on a golf trip I have been doing for years & she was annoyed & that was only after 4 months of dating, then I moved in with her & her 2 kids & the drama amassed, she didn’t like my friend Angela for some odd reason & lied about things she did to get fired at work(she worked with her) & never realizing it was her jealousy kicking in,then even though I spent 95% of my time with her she never trusted me because of Angela being my friend,so she started going through my phone & looking at my texts & seeing who I called getting on my computer & going into my cookies to see if I was doing anything naughty or looking through my history,& I couldn’t understand her mistrust I wasn’t doing ANYTHING!! so I left her for 3 months & then went crawling back for some reason thinking everything
could get better & it was my fault & I took all the blame & she still said NO!!! & we still talk & she’ll call me or i’ll call her & I asked her to go to the movies recently & she said I don’t think its a good idea then I said I do & she said oh i’ll think about it & blah blah blah? Why am I doing this to myself,I love her dearly & wish It could of worked the first time & why should I want her back & what are my chances with her??

Kyle McIlroy answers:

I think you really need to evaluate where you’re going with this situation. Read everything that you just posted on here. Is this really what makes you happy? If it does, then you’re not allowing yourself to be truly happy. The things you’ve dealt with would make most people miserable.

There’s a reason why you broke up with her and that’s because she didn’t trust you. Unless you are giving her reasons not to trust you, this will not change. She may have a lot of insecurity issues that SHE needs to work on, so that she can be able to trust someone else. This is not your problem to fix.

I’m still quite young and learning myself, so I can’t blame you for wanting her back. To be honest, relationships like these don’t tend to work out for the best. Do yourself a favor and consider this to be opportunity to focus on your own happiness. You can find your own source of happiness while being on your own. I hope it’ll help you realize that the both of you are better off, without being in an unstable relationship. Good luck.

Sandy asks…

Now that Obama is back in Washington from his re-election campaign trip to New York yesterday…?

Now that he’s consulted with Al Sharpton on how to keep his base happy and contributing money,

Will he have time to use that ‘laser-like focus’ of his on something as minor as the govt shutting down?

Maybe in between golf games this afternoon?

How do you look at someone that calls for a talk at the white house, then beats feet to New York? He is a man/boy president with two faces and big floppy ears!
